Seven Initiated at Vimy L.O.L. 2697 in Whitby
On the evening of November 24th, 2009 seven members joined the ranks of Vimy L.O.L.2697 (Whitby-Oshawa). The lodge room at the I.O.O.F. Hall in Whitby was filled to capacity as Worshipful Master Edward Kelly assumed the gavel for the large initiation meeting. Special guests on the dais were the Most Worshipful Grand Master and Sovereign Most Wor. Bro. Harry Thompson and the Provincial Grand Master; Right Worshipful Brother Dennis Glazier.
The newest members are Brothers Robert McMillan, Andrew Maxwell, Wayne Hopson, Shaun Taylor, Lynn Barr, Billy Scott and Gordon McMillan. They were cordially received by the Worshipful Master and the large number of members and visitors in attendance.
In the front row are the newest members (from l. to r.) Robert McMillan, Andrew Maxwell, Wayne Hopson, Shaun Taylor, Lynn Barr, Billy Scott and Gordon McMillan
In the back row are (from l. to r.) Archie MacKinnon (Deputy Master), Most Worshipful Brother Harry Thompson (Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Canada), Right Worshipful Brother Edward Kelly (the Worshipful Master) and Right Worshipful Brother Dennis Glazier,( Provincial Grand Master.)
The degree was exemplified in a proficient manner by the members of the degree team which included Brothers Donald Guy, John Wells, John Speers, Christopher Gullins, Archie MacKinnon and Gerry Darroch.
Both Grand Masters congratulated the newest members and wished Vimy L.O.L. every success in the years to come.
Vimy L.O.L.2697 was re-activated on March 30th, 2007. The original lodge was formed on September the 15th, 1917; only five months following the historic battle of Vimy Ridge. The lodge commemorates that battle as an historic development in Canadian history and pays homage to the more than 3,600 fatalities and the 11,000 wounded in battle. The Battle of Vimy Ridge saw the four divisions of the Canadian Corps working together as one formation for the first time and together with the British Corps to their south had by the end of the battle captured more ground and prisoners than any offensive up to that point in World War I.
From the original thirteen members Vimy L.O.L. has blossomed to over forty in number and looks forward to adding more to the roster and having an increased presence in the community in 2010.
Following the meeting a time of fellowship and a meal enjoyed with the thanks to Mrs. Melody Glazier and crew.
