The 1948 Toronto Orange Parade
On Saturday July the 10th, 1948 the Orange community in Toronto celebrated the Anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne by parading for the 128th consecutive occasion in the city.
Over 6,500 marchers including 45 bands made the trek from Queen’s Park to the grounds of the C.N.E. At the head of the procession S.A.Hollingsworth portrayed King William III, astride a white charger. County Master Thomas Murphy led all marchers.
Mayor (Brother) Hiram McCallum accepted wreaths from various branches of the order at the Toronto Cenotaph. Brother Gordon Keyes represented the “Orange War Veterans Association “at the wreath laying. Spectators in the downtown core and at City Hall were 5 – 10 deep.
Following the parade luncheon was catered and games and amusements were available for the children on the Exhibition Grounds. The key-note speaker on the day was the Grand Master of Canada M.W.Brother Robert Hardy Small, noted Toronto Orangeman and politician.
Today we may reflect upon the efforts of the men and women of Toronto’s Orange Community and of their invaluable contributions to the city and to the Association. Their efforts have made it possible for us to celebrate the Anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne as we gather for this: North America’s longest consecutively held parade.
